Sunday - January 1, 2023
4:01 p.m. - Ran Discovery / Southwestern. Legs and body heavy from eating holiday junk food. Saw an old dude running ever so slowly, wearing bright orange. Wished a couple of dog walkers a happy new year. The sky dumped rain on me for about a minute. Low 50’s and windy. The Lumberjack Slam I had at lunch didn't fully digest. Burping on the run - tasted like coffee and pancakes. It was like I was eating breakfast all over again!

Wednesday - January 4, 2023
3:38 p.m. - Ran CVGC started out easy. The further I progressed, the more difficult the run became. I was out of breath and struggling by the 2nd mile. I needed to snap out of this funk and so, with the risk of aggravating my back, I changed the workout into a fartlek run. I ran four sections over the last 3 miles where the pace accelerated: 7:50’s, 7:35’s, 7:25’s, 6:10’s.

3:54 p.m. - Ran Discovery / Southwestern / Tiffany. Lower back pain. Ran comfortably. Haven’t managed my food and liquid intake properly. I needed to use the restroom within the first mile even though I went just before running. I need to ensure I don’t drink at least an hour before the run.

2:05 p.m. - Ran loops around Sunset Park with just a little on the lower trail. Hard-packed dirt was messing with my feet but got the run done ok. My son played Roller Hockey with a couple of friends while I ran.

3:00 p.m. - Ran Otay. Light wind, light rain, muddy trails. Tanked at 4 miles. Lunch wasn't digested but only dry heaved - no yack. There was a young dude running with a 30 lb. weight vest - insane!

3:31 p.m. - Lacked motivation and a little worn out. Didn’t want to run from the house and didn’t want to run loops @ CVGC. Nevertheless I went to CVGC and ran out to the 125. The hill was a good workout and I enjoyed the view. It’s now post-run and I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s workout - wherever that may take me.

10:36 a.m. - What a pleasant surprise! My son asked where I was running today as he wanted to run go 3 miles, the furthest distance thus far. Although Rice Canyon was the plan, he wanted to run CVGC since a loop would be the perfect course. What a treat - he actually ran with me for the first ½ mile before taking off! When I met him back at the truck, he agreed to run another loop. Wow! Getting my teenage son to run with his pop felt like divine intervention! A run I will cherish for a long time.

3:17 p.m. - Ran CVGC - path flooded by the bridge - slight detour. The ground is more unstable by the apartments - more rocks are exposed as a result from the recent rain. Breathing was difficult but gradually picked it up to 7:25 pace towards the end of the run.

No exercise but did something even better. I took my son to Road Runner Sports to buy his first pair of track spikes and a new set of trainers. We also picked up a new stick at Play It Again Sports. It was nice taking a day off - I needed it!

Monday - February 6, 2023
11:50 a.m. - It was a real struggle with today’s run. Physically and mentally fatigued. I was ready to stop at a ½ mile, and every 5 minutes I questioned if I should continue running. I cut short the planned 8 miles to and through Rice Canyon and settled for a return trip home cutting through Southwestern. I didn’t make it and walked the remainder ½ mile. I was hoping to see my nephew at college but that didn’t happen. However, I saw my wife on her drive to Dollar Tree, and that was a pleasant surprise.

4:03 p.m. I wasn’t sure how today’s workout was going to be given the mental and physical fatigue over the last couple of days. I started out slow and felt challenged but eventually was able to get through the entire run. Physically I felt my form was off so I didn’t look at my pace during the run. I just knew that it was gradually getting faster. The mile splits were 10:03, 8:59, 8:42, 8:31, 8:10, 8:17, 7:59, 7:45, 7:44, 4:33. Ironic how the last 2 weeks I felt like I was getting stronger and then all of a sudden there’s no energy.
My son had his first day of track practice. He started with stretches, then plyometrics at the Soccer field, and then a run to Eastlake and around the lake. He was fatigued and walking stiff at dinner time but did well for his first track practice!

1:51 p.m. Wasn't certain how today would be - ate too close to the run - a JIB Teriyaki Bowl combo about an hour before. Goal was 7 but would be happy with a single loop @ CVGC. Started out very slow but was able to find a good stride. However, hitting the grass caused too much instability for my knee so had to slow it down. Almost stopped at 1.9 miles because the pain was sharp. However, once I got to the smooth dirt path, it got better. Gradually the pace went faster but then when I was hitting sub 8 my left foot gave out without a lot of pain. Occurred at 5 miles. Almost stopped again but told myself to to a light jog for a tenth, then a quarter, then, gradually, the pain subsided. Completed the run with 2 loops. Tomorrow will be a rest day.

12:08 p.m. Took it easy and made it through the run without any issues with my foot, knee or back. Started my physical therapy yesterday for the back. Scoliosis is the cause, and the PT will help reduce/prevent strain from progressing. Takes another hour out of the day, but it will be worth it.

3:38 p.m. Ran Corpus Christi and no issues other than stiffness. Cold with strong winds - couldn’t help by smile. Tree branch fell on me on my cool down walk. Just a small 2 footer but prickly with pine needles. That’s never happened before.
